I want to buy a new surround sound system

Hi everyone,

In my household there is a 5.1 surround sound system but it's lacking. At least in my standards it is (I'm a tech nerd) I've been reading and learning more and more about surround sound systems. Even thought when teaching myself about surround sounds I feel like I don't know every specific detail. If you guys don't mind, I want to know everything I could know about surround sound systems so I can for one help people when they ask me as well as just to further my knowledge in technology because I've never been to good with surround sounds.

The latest is ATMOS, if you have the space, can place a dozen speakers in your cave room. My Mom won't let me put that many in the living room.
