I was reading Laserdisc is actually analog...?

One of these days, I will probably locate schematics for my player and
tap into the signal and mount a demodulator somewhere in there and
drill a hole on the back for an AC-3 output. Then i could finally
watch Mortal Kombat.

My receiver is an Aiwa AV-DV70 with built-in DD/AC-3(optical and
coaxial)..... do you think this would have a demodulator? I assume not?
I really want to get digital surround out of my player because my
stereo system is pretty kickass(despite the aiwa receiver.. it
surprisingly sounds VERY good.) 220 watt Yamaha 4-way fronts, Yamaha
200 watt center, and 150 watt Yamaha surrounds topped off with a 200
watt Cerwin-Vega 15" subwoofer. :D

I used to have a *sweet* Yamaha receiver system but the right channel
blew.

AFAIK, there's no such thing as an internal demodulator.

It seems to me that your player should be able to carry the disc's PCM signal
(if you have a digital output of some sort) or at the very least give you
access to analog audio.

Your player is already equipped for PCM digital sound if it has a Coax or
Optical digital output on it. It's only the AC-3 audio from these discs you're
player cannot handle. What you need to add internally is the proper output for
carrying the AC-3/RF signals to an EXTERNAL demodulator.

His player is an older industrial model that can only read the analog
sound channels.

Listing your speakers in watts makes me think you still have a lot to learn
about audio...

Anyway, as has been recommended by several others, you might be better off
finding one of the better units already modded, than trying to mod your
seemingly sub-par player. YOu better start planning for the RF demodulator
as well, unless you also pickup one of the top end a/v receivers from
Denon(5000 series), Pioneer Elite (5X series), Yamaha RX-V1, Z-9, Z-1, you
wont find too many receivers that have whats called an AC-3 RF in....

Steve, MSB offered to install an internal demodulator, as an option,
on the laserdisc players that they sold. It was an extremely expensive
option- around $650US! Much cheaper to buy a separate demodulator.

Actually precisionlaserdisc service did make a demodulator board you could
put inside the LD player. They came out with it right before they
disappeared. I have worked on a CLD-97 that had one of these added. It
worked fine but there was one thing I did not like. It did not tap into the
PCM digital out with a replay to select AC-3 when active. It had its own
separate output. So you had a AC-3 bitstream output and a PCM for stereo or
DTS. This now occupies two inputs on your receiver. The external
demodulators that switch are a better option in my opinion.

That look like the European site. I know Precisionlaserdisc was working
with what looked like an European head office, I don't know for sure. It
looks like that site may still be active. I believe used demodulators are
cheaper than their kits.

As for precisionlaserdisc I know some people tried to get the internal kits.
Some got them and for other Precisionlaserdisc just stopped contacting them.
I once called them and they denied knowledge of the kits. Makes me think
legal issues.

I don't see how they can deny knowledge of the kits

Wow. MSB's player was Pioneer based, right?

The MSB I saw was a Panasonic LX-990U and MSB also corrected the black level
AGC issue.

Nice unit.

Take a look at their home page. Precisionlaserdisc no longer exists and
they refer you to the BDE website which is in Europe. I personally called
Precisionlaserdisc a few times, early on they told me all about the Internal
demodulator and they were excited, at the end they acted like they didn't
know what I was talking about (right before they closed).
