Hi can anyone help me decide which chip is better for a 15.6 inch dell laptop?

Hello and welcome to the forums
What's your usage ? and is battery life very important for you or not ?

thanks for your responses. the 2620m is 90 euros more than the 2630qm. i'd be using the laptop at home for basic stuff like emailing, photos, movies, but also want to be able to use it for games. i'm just not sure if four cores gives you added performance, or future proofing etc

2630QM is usually more expensive if everything else is equal.
There should be other differences between then two models if the price difference is 90 Euros higher for the 2620M.

but you'd still recommend the 2620m because it's a bit faster? i've also heard not a lot of games or software actually make use of four cores so maybe that makes the 2630qm a bit redundant

Depends on your task.
Apps like PS,3D max(usually most image/video editing software) benefit from quad core;whereas, most games run better on a faster clocked dual core

nice, thanks for that. i think i'll opt for the 2620m. am also going for 8 gigs of ram, 1080p screen and a 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M grafics card. probably overcooking it but it's just all so tempting...

If I were you, I will choose i7-2630qm instead. Simple as that the passmark difference. You can check them at www.cpubenchmark.net.
Intel Core i7-2620M @ 2.70GHz (dual cores) : 3285
Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00GHz (quad cores):6321
Intel Core i7-2720QM @ 2.2GHz (quad cores):7564
Intel Core i7-2820QM @ 2.30GHz (quad cores):7663
If you check the configuration example on lenovo W520, you find even 2720qm is only $80 higher than 2620M (the rest are the same). I just checked it today. Though the 2820qm is $200 more than 2720qm. So 2720QM is the best choice for me.
