I want to upgrade my old thinkpad hd with a higher capacity one.
The old drive is a 12mm height drive, but the newer ones are generally
9mm. Will I need a caddy or mounting tray to accomodate the thinner
drive? The old drive was not in any sort of tray...it simply slid into
the bay snugly.

Thanx in advance.

It will fit fine.

It will fit, but note that there SHOULD be a caddy/tray on your current
drive (the 600 series caddy is very "thin," and in addition to being
screwed on, it is usually stuck to the bottom of the drive with strips
of double-sided tape, making it difficult to remove without damaging
it). A 9mm drive won't fit "snugly" in the drive bay without that caddy.

And BTW, be sure to have the latest BIOS, as that will allow you to use
any size (in GB) drive.

Exactly. I recommend getting some double-sided duct tape from the hardware
store for this task, although so far I've managed replacements without it. And
BE GENTLE when detaching the old hard drive from the caddy! (If you're
forewarned and gentle, it isn't all that difficult to remove the drive without
damaging the caddy -- you just need to be aware of the tape.)
