Ibm thinkpad problems start up

My T24 Has a black screen, the fan is on and it needs a new battery but it is plugged in. so what could be the problem? Is it really better to buy a new one then waste the money as some have said? What do you think?

If a T24 is broken, yes it's a lot better to buy a new one. You can find a used T60 or T61 for about the cost of replacing your screen (with labor costs that is). Even a T43 is a big upgrade, but those tend to have the same dead screen issue with their age.
