if i have a laptop with an hdmi port can i hook up my ps3 to it? I plugged in my hdmi to the port but nothing happened. If it is possible, how can u change the video output on the laptop to show the ps3 video?

Short answer, no. The HDMI port on the laptop is a video out, not in.

That HDMI port is only used to connect to an external monitor.
