I'm not saying it's should be legal to take a cam in or anything like that, but the lawsuits pirates get faced with, and these guys jail time. Come on there are drunk drivers that literally kill people that spend less time in jail. I know personally one guy who hit and killed a little girl and only spent one year in jail. Seriously give me a break.[/citation]
OK that's insane, a guy killed a little girl and only spent a year in jail (nothing), and a pirate who only recorded movies in theaters got 5

and they actually paid to watch the movie!

I don't want to live in this world anymore!

as much as i agree that when compared to a crime that results in the loss of a life or sever trauma; the punishment seems excessive. the largest factor was:
part of the conspiracy

and in the (blind) eyes of justice, it does not matter if it involved copy right infringement, prostitution, or murder. had each individual worked in a solitary manner than each consequence would have been far less severe. but once it was established that all were working as cohorts with a system in place to support their 'illegal' activities; that opened the door to a whole new ballgame and set of consequences.

blame the lawyers!

Without cam rips, I'd have to wait for months to see some movies. They're simply not available in English in my area, period. I'd buy a DVD but no, gotta wait till March for Skyfall and till hell knows when for Hobbit... why? So this is sad to hear.

This:

According to the indictment, the group focused on making movies available before the public release of DVDs.

... does NOT sound like a crime to me, this is something that helps people like me to see the movies which otherwise they wouldn't be able to see (sorry, but I refuse to watch movies in a local language with English subs) either at all or for a very long time. So thanks a bunch, "U.S. District judge Arenda Wright Allen", you just ruined it for many, MANY people who will never go to a cinema anyway.

People who go the the theaters to see a movie would not settle for this much lower quality content. Nor would it effect DVD/Blu-ray sales. I'm not pro-piracy I get why its still a crime but these sort of punishments simply do not match the crime. Five years for a nonviolent crime and now it's my and every other American's money getting wasted on these people for those bogus prison lengths.

If they were breaking into theaters and stealing the films and then turning around and getting a profit I could understand some jail time. Breaking a entry, trespassing, and theft would be much more serious and I don't even think 5 years makes sense then. Prison is no laughing matter and this just seems like cruel and unusual punishment to me, the time doesn't match the crime.

Our laws should not cater in favor of any group or entity they should be sane and fair. I don't care how rich corporations are or how much they donate to the candidates we do not need to destroy lives and cost tax payers dollars to imprison citizens for non-violent acts. People convicted of rape and manslaughter can get less time than this! The amount of time is suppose to fit the severity of the crime. Are we to believe that pirating a film is worse than manslaughter? That supposedly costing corporate profits is worse than taking a human life?

God this pisses me off...

Who do you think got the money to pay the lawyers? Right. Movie industries.

[citation][nom]in_the_loop[/nom]I feel exactly the same about Kim Dotcom, who also made a fortune on pirated stuff.[/citation]
Kim Dotcom never got any money from me or anyone I know.
Can't say the same about Disney and a whole bunch of other movie companies, and it's not limited to movies, I'm talking any software or data that can be downloaded in general.

I don't care if Kim Dotcom gets rich so long as he's providing a service to the public. At least he's an honest thief. Companies will steal from you and "oh no, they're doing it legally".

It's not a justice system, it's a legal system...

No surprise that you'd find a solid portion of Tom's readers somehow deluding themselves into thinking that walking into a theater and STEALING someone's work can be justified by bringing in more revenue. There is no rational defense for someone who records movies in a theater with the intent to distribute (nor is there a rationale for high quality versions). If a movie still manages to gross highly, it is in spite of piracy.

If someone is compelled to go to the theater after watching a pirated version, we may say that it is a testament to the true quality of the movie; however, payment should not be contingent upon the individual's arbitrary measure of movie quality. The rationale behind defending piracy is a misguided overcompensation for the perceived injustice of watching a "bad" movie.

[citation][nom]JonnyDough[/nom]Your grammar is trash. Try a dictionary next time...for each word.[/citation]

Go ahead and show how many languages you master with 100% grammar and without tools to do the writing for you. For me English is a second language along with two others (if you lack math skills that 4 languages). At least most understood what was said in the post judging by the votes - You apparently didn't... telling? Perhaps!

When you write something, it is for an audience. If your audience cannot understand you then what is the point of writing at all? You must consider who you are writing for when you try to convey your thoughts, and seek to perfect it prior to publishing it. You should have used this opportunity to learn from your mistakes, rather than typing a retort.

[citation][nom]zargonog[/nom]@carl, says right in the first sentence, 5 years. Not too out of line IMO, they will get out quicker from good behavior and such. too bad they will be someones bitch though.[/citation]
i give them 3 weeks til pardon and parole esp if it's a california prison, they're releasing murderers because the state is bankrupt and their prisons are full.

i am surprised any one still goes to the theaters any more. they're like drive in theaters, going the way of the dodo.

nobody want to sit next to convicted felons and gang members drug addicts pedo's and listen to them yap on their cell phones during the movies. a few more people going to theaters and killing every one inside should pretty much kill the theater industry.

Someone needs to do something about this by "taking care" of the people that sue over at the movie industry - seems like they dont give a dam . They could care less if they get a 10 year sentence . CAM is garbage but some people that would never buy the dvd or go to theaters bc they cant afford it can at-least look from outside the window .

Why do you think they are releasing those rapists and murders? They have to make room these dastardly movie pirates who are killing Hollywood with their superior quality and higher priced releases.
