Use either a component cable set from your DVD player to the component inputs of your TV or use the composite (video) and left/right audio outputs to the appropriate shared ports of your TV's component inputs.

Yep.
Component technically is better but how obvious that will be is hard to say.

As said make sure the colors for video and audio all match up between the TV and DVD player.

Finally, if it's not obvious, you must switch the VIDEO INPUT using the TV remote to toggle between the inputs you have (HDMI, component..).
