what's the purpose of saving the phone # starting with the + sign?

The + is the world wide GSM equivalent of 011, therefore a number in the
proper + format (i.e. + country code area code number) can be dialed from
anywhere there is a GSM signal.

Trust me, store it in the + format, it's something that will rarely ever
affect you, but when it does you'l be so happy you took the extra second to
enter it every time you entered a number. TTYL

The + sign is a symbol to represents the digits to be dialed when
dialing an international telephone number. In Canada the digits are
011. The service provider replaces the + sign with the appropriate
digits. Dialing an international telephone number with either the +
sign or 011 will work.

The drawback of entering the telephone with the + sign and country
code is that you will never know if the call is long distance or not.
For example, an entry of +16478675309 will always be dialed correctly
wherever you are in the Fido network or roaming. However if the entry
were 6478675309 it will only be connected if Fido considers it as a
local call.

What I find interesting is that canada411.com's WAP site allows me to save a
telephone number as a address book entry on my siemens M55. Unfortunatly, the
phone that is save is just areacode and number, without the +1 (or just the
1). This means that the number is undiablable until you edit it to add the
relevant bits.

Thanks for the reply's, So does this mean if I store a North American number
in my phone is it + then area code then # or do I still have to put the 1
between the + and the area code? After its done then I can call any number
saved from any city I'm in without having to worry if its long distance or
not?

The "1" is the "country code" of north america, therefore yes, you require
it.

For example, the number 905-555-1212 would be stored as: +19055551212
