Question intel(R) storage middleware service - Slow WiFi

Wifi on my new laptop has been really slow.
I followed the instructions here
after a lot of disabling and re-enabling, I narrowed it down to intel(R) storage middleware service

My question is... What is `intel(R) storage middleware service`?
Do I need it? Will my laptop be ok if I keep this disabled?
Is there a way to keep this service running without impacting the WiFi adapter?

With this service disabled, I get 250-300mbps
with the service running I get 4-28mbps... A big difference

I checked, all drivers are up-to-date.

System seems to run fine with it disabled but I have read that it helps to preserve the SSD so I would rather find a way to have it run without the impact on my network connection
