[citation][nom]Pei-chen[/nom]LOL, the amount of fake news about China as the game draw closer. Why would foreign sport journalists need access to Chinese language version of Amnesty International or topic on Tibet? This seems to be written especially to discredit the Chinese with idiotic quibble such as this:“Cuban reporter Joel Garcia Leon, with the magazine Trabajadores, said he expected the censorship. But he was overwhelmed by other red tape. "I'm surprised how tightly controlled and complicated everything is here," he said. "To get a phone number from China Mobile, I have to give them a copy of my passport and my mother's maiden name. This seems quite excessive and abnormal."”Don’t tell me foreigner can sign up for cellphone in the US without ID. I’m a US citizen and I needed my SSN# and a picture ID to sign up for Cingular Go phone and SSN# and credit card info for a 2 year contract. It doesn't matter actually as most foreign (western) news organizations lost their creditability earlier this year with their biased reporting. Now I only read NYTimes and WSJ for domestic and financial news. [/citation]
For one China is a communist state and have complete control over their populace. The point is that China is refusing freedoms for the Olympic games. They should never have been allowed to host the Olympics. But hey they also approved the Soviet Union. It's just funny how many of the same people that complained about rights in the 60's love these oppressive communist states.
As for the SSN for a cell phone that is company policy not government law, a huge difference. Albeit aggravating these companies are exercising their rights. These numbers are used for credit checks to decide if a deposit is needed and how much the deposit should be for agreement period. If you refuse the SSN and background check many providers do give you the option of a large cash deposit.
