Solved! IPhone XR earpiece speaker and mic stop working

I have an IPhone XR that just recently ran out of the 1 year warranty. Suddenly the last week or so I notice that I can barely hear anyone through my headphone earpiece. I have to put the call on speaker to hear anything. Also my mic has started having issues also. I am not sure if these problems are related but any help would be appreciated. Can the speaker be replaced myself if it is faulty?

while someone is calling, can you increase the volume by the volume up button?

Try updating the phone

Restart the phone

reset the phone (backup important data before)
