is a quad core OK is not using for gaming?

Just trying to buy a new HP laptop for everyday home use. Found one that is intel quad core but heard an i5 was better. (???)

A quaf core can be a Core2Quad but that would make it worse off than even the Core i3.

If thats the case then by all means the Core i5 is better.
