There's a little more to it than that.
The newsgroup itself has no parent child relationships between messages.
Messages posted as a reply may have "Re:" added to the subject line and
a header with the message ID of the original message inserted but that
is a function of the news reader software used by the client and, of
course, whether the client chooses to use the "Reply" function in the
news reader software.
The _appearance_ of parent-child relationships is entirely within the
news reader software at the client end. Netscape, for example, sorts
messages by subject (ignoring "Re:" and other language versions) and,
when two or more messages have the same header, assumes that the
messages are part of a thread. Then messages with "Re:" or
back-reference headers are treated as replies. Messages without either
are sorted by timestamp and the later one becomes is treated as a reply
to the earlier.
Since Björn posted without using the Reply function, his message and the
original one from Nishant were sorted by timestamp and, because Nishant
has the date set incorrectly on his computer, Björn's was taken as the
originator of the thread.
