i want to buy a laptop for gaming in the £500 - £700 price range. Is this laptop good enough to play modern games such as Battlefield 4, Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim etc... fluently at medium - high graphics settings? I won't be playing many next-gen titles on this laptop. Mostly just last gen-titles.

Will only having 6GB of RAM be a problem?
Is the CPU and GPU good enough?

Laptop overview:

Intel® Core™ i5-4210U Processor (1.7 GHz, 2.7 GHz with TurboBoost, 3 MB cache)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (4GB DDR3)
6GB of RAM

Your CPU is nice but not a gaming cpu because it's the laptop version which obviously requires less energy. The "U" tells you that it uses very minimal power. CPUs like this are used in Macbook Airs ;)

Just for a comparison to my cpu (which isn't the reference though): http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/927/Intel_Core_i5_Mobile_i5-4210U_vs_Intel_Core_i7_Mobile_i7-4850HQ.html

The 6GB won't be a problem at all and your GTX 850M is pretty powerful for a laptop graphics card!

Maybe you can find a similar laptop with a better performing CPU? (maybe customizable?)

Would this laptop be a better choice? i don't think the graphics card is better, but the CPU and RAM is.

I would say your first pick is better, CPU is decent, GPU is great and RAM is fine unless your running massive games or with mods and such. Although the second pick has 8GB RAM (usually recommended) that graphics card is not the best.

First pick is better cause both laptops have the same CPU with different GPUs and RAM sizes. Maybe you can find a notebook with a better i5 CPU and the same GTX850M as your first choice ;)

I suggest you to look for HP 450 G1 it is around 700euro ; and it powered with intel core i7 4702MQ (which is one of the top10 best cpu's for gaming) , it has 8GB DDR3 RAM (supports up to 16GB) it has dual graphics: 1.Intel 4600 Graphics & 2.AMD Radeon HD 8750M (2GB DDR3) , 1TB 5400rpm .. for my opinion this laptop will do for you
