Im having an issue with my surround sound. Im playing pc games on a 4k tv. My surround receiver is not 4k compatible, so I cannot use an hdmi from pc to receiver to tv.
I currently have my pc hooked up to my 4k tv for video with an hdmi.
I can either run a second hdmi from mobo to receiver or run an optical cord from mobo to receiver. The issue is that it will not go to the dolby digital setting for surround sound on my receiver. It will not switch from pcm mode.
I've tried the config in playback devices to set up surround sound but it is greyed out. My mobo is a gigabyte z97 ud3h and the receiver is a pioneer vsx 520.
Any help would be appreciated

What you want will not work optical unless the game itself outputs in dolby digital 5.1.. Most games use uncompressed audio which means you would only get stereo sound using optical. There is no way around this. You can of course do as you said and use a second hdmi to the receiver, then you can use 5.1 uncompressed audio. I have used a second hdmi to my receiver for several years with no problems.

When I use the second hdmi I cannot change it to surround sound (dolby plxx) on receiver either. I stays on pcm mode. The second hdmi acts as a second screen as well which is kinda annoying.
Would a sound card help? My ps4 works in surround sound perfectly so why isn't my pc working?
