Maybe the problem is that with all this kid has done, there was still a Wii to take. My guess is the kid has a tv in his bedroom, maybe even a computer too.
Gone are the days with things like video game time and computer usage were monitored by parents.
And from the sounds of it, this kid, whatever the problem, needs to be in an alternative placement school designed to handle his issues.
As for the parents, of course I don't know the details, but I wouldn't hesitate to say there's an epidemic of appeasement as a parenting strategy.
Kudos to the parents handling their responsibilities.
Shame on the ones who aren't.

This kid obviously has some sort of mental issue, and when normal punishment doesn't work, you need to get him some help. Normal 12 year olds do NOT smash in windows with rocks nor assault students and teachers at multiple schools.

Why was he ordered to stay with his grandmother and not his parents? Sounds to me like there is probably trouble at home, causing this child to lash out at society. Most bullies are they themselves bullied by someone bigger and strong than them at home. Maybe instead of taking this kids Wii, the police should round up Mom, Dad, or big brother/sister for child abuse, then send this child to counseling.

Of course this is Tom's, so I doubt we've heard the full story.

sounds like it wont even matter, he apparently wasn't playing it anyway. he was busy beating ass and taking names. kid's either going military, cage fighter or rapist. maybe a little of all 3.

On next offense, put him down like an animal and suggest that his parents start over.[/citation]Based on how badly this one turned out, they probably wouldn't do much better with any kids in the future either. Put him down and sterilize the parents.

As I'm sure there are many parents and future parents here, how do you handle a 12 year old kid who is threatening the safety of your own child without doing something so drastic as to get sent to prison for assault on a child?

I hope I never have to deal with something like this. There doesn't seem to be an immediate solution without dire consequences.

It's a shame today's kids act like derelicts 24/7. I concur with many, as if I had that list of accolades when I was that age, my parents (i.e. my mom) would have beat my ass. Today's bad parents...I just don't know.

Finally some words of wisdom!

Ya take away Nintendo Wii, and let him switch to PC and PS3. Somebody lend him Grand Theft Auto IV and we can a new reality show.

Yeah, man! This preteen kid's a bully and a delinquent, obviously we have to kill him. It's the only way to be sure!

this child needs to be on medication and/or in some serious therapy. otherwise we are right now reading about our next ultra violent serial killer.

mark my words on this one folks, but hopefully before he kills hell do something else to end up in prison

[citation][nom]trevorvdw[/nom]Issue a court order that all student and teachers at his school can beat him senseless with no legal consequences anytime he commits any acts of violence against them. It'll end very quickly.[/citation]
Are you serious? Do you believe threatened/actual violence can supress violence in an already violent person? I'd really like to know if you believe this.

Wall of text incoming!

Did you read the full article? Sterilize the parents? Kid lives with his grandmother. It's hard for a lot of grandparents to be a parent again. Most grandparents instinctively want to spoil their grandchildren, therefore they end up being very lenient when it comes to punishment, as referenced by this little jerk still having access to video games. Out of control kids know it's much easier to threaten little old grannie, which is a shame. Instead of growing up to respect their elders, they turn into little jerks with no respect for anything or anyone.

I feel bad for grandparents who are overwhelmed by their children's children, because the kid's actual parents were incapable of taking care of their own spawn. Now, his parents might have passed away when he was really young, or another outstanding circumstance, or they could just be complete screw-ups in need of sterilization as you suggest. :)

"This generation is going to ruin the world!"

Why is this line always resorted to? You know why you didn't hear of these crazy kids 30 or so years ago? Because the news media wasn't the over-sensationalized, over-hyped machine it is today. You can get your news from so many places, the internet, tv, newspaper, radio, cellphone, etc. Most news organizations are trying to one-up each other trying to find the most sensational story they can report, so they can bring in the big ratings.

It's not that some kids years ago, weren't like the kid in the story, it is that it was under or not reported. There have always been wild and crazy kids, who were disrespectful, future criminals. However, you only heard about it from word of mouth, not from the not from the nightly news on TV.

From listening to my step-father who grew up in the 60s, there was a lot more fighting and trouble-making going on than when I was a kid in the 80s/90s, but back then it was not so sensational.

This also hasn't just started happening because we don't beat our kids as much anymore. You don't have to beat your kids to be effective with discipline. I will agree that the kid in the story might need some sense knocked into him, but your average kid does not. I've never once had to lay a hand on my child, yet he's not busting out windows, killing small animals or beating up old ladies.

Sorry, I just will never buy into the hype that kids were so much better a few decades ago. You just didn't have 9.5 million news outlets (exaggeration) shoving every little piece of "news" in your face back then and spoon-feeding you their opinion.

Rose-tinted glasses can be nice to look through, but not really based in reality. People talk about how much nicer people were in the past (40s/50s), yet forget that during those times crimes like rape were by and large blamed on the victim, racism was accepted, and murder rates in the US were pretty close to the same as they are now.

For instance did you know that in 1950 the murder rate (in the US) was 4.6 per 100,000 and in 2005 it was 5.6 per 100,000?

So yeah, I will always have a hard time believing it was so much nicer back in the "good ole' days".

For kids like this,

beat the shit outa him is the one and ONLY Solution.

Wii? come on. he can ALWAYS get it from someone, since it sound like he is an asshole anyway.

Well personally I think this is a double-edged sword. On one end you make the kid comprehend the association between doing something bad to getting bad thing done to you in return...which should fix him. On the other side, you have this kid that doesn't comprehend reality and assumes everyone beating him is because everyone is out to get them, he gets paranoid, gets put on not-needed medication (because psychiatrists/psychologists don't know up from down), he starts being more aggressive (because he is scared), turns into a serial killer or commits suicide. It is a very delicate situation and I am all too familiar with it...
