Lap top and projector not working together properly

When I attach my /toshiba laptop to a projector. The image on the screen is fine but the image on my laptop is in stand by/screen saver mode.

Hit Funtion f8 at least thats what it is on the laptop I have here. Look for the f key with 2 screens on it it cycles through external/internal/both screens.
