Laptop advice

Ok heres the situation, I know nothing of laptops and my lil bro has some specs for college and I was looking for a little advice on where the best spot would be to grab one.
Here are the specs and thanks for your help!

Also is it just me or do these specs seem a little high for a college undergrad?

pc compaible laptop computer
windows xp professional or tablet pc edition operating system
2006 business microsoft software bundle
pentium m 2.0 ghz+, or 1.83 ghz dual core
memory - 1gb ram
80 gb harddive
audio card (speakers or headphones also required)
64 mb discrete or 128 mb shared vidio adapter card (vista compatible)
CD-RW
DVD
802.11g wireless NIC
10/100/1000 baseT ethernet card
56k Modem
256Mb+ USB memory
inkjet or laser printer
warranty - 2 yrs parts and labor on site

That looks standard. I'd go to Dell (with coupons) or HP if you don't want to spend a lot, you should be able to get one for $700-900.

Nah... they seem typical these days. I've worked with a variety of laptops and found that the keyboard layout matters more to me than anything else - I type a lot and preferred wide layouts. I find small keyboards unusable.

Your brother should take a look at a few - at Best Buy / Future Shop / Fry's - to decide what he likes.

Ok I went to dell but for these specs the lowest I could config on on there site was like 1700 bones? If someone can do it for 700-900 please show how.
