My sister has a Dell Studio 1747 laptop. When the power cord is connected and plugged into the wall and the battery is installed, the computer will power on but shut down after a few seconds, apparently not even making it through POST. We tried removing the battery and leaving the power adapter plugged in, but there was no change. Then, we tried re-installing the battery and unplugging the power adapter. This solved the problem. I told her where she could order a new power adapter and she said 'Thanks.'
But now it occurs to me... maybe the problem is actually the PSU (or whatever you call the laptop equivelant) instead of the adapter. Or, if the laptop has no seperate PSU-like component, perhaps the motherboard itself is the problem. Aside from trying a new adapter or, even worse, replacing the motherboard, is there any way to determine which of these is the case?
Perhaps worth mentioning...
According to the manual, there is, on this model, an "AC Adapter Connector" inside the laptop and it can be replaced without having to mess with the motherboard directly. (Though you do have to remove the subwoofer assembly). Couldn't this connector be the problem?
