When running most games on anything other than low, my cpu readings will randomly spike (mid to upper 90c) causing it to throttle. I am looking at it happen using NZXT monitoring. I've tried reapplying thermal paste and completely disassembling the fans and getting the fuzz out of my heatsink (which I did find a decent layer of). I've also bought the llano v12 ultra laptop cooler that was recommended to me. It lowers the cruising temps of the laptop but does not eliminate the spikes that cause throttling. What else could I look at? Is there a way to check the integrity of my actual CPU to diagnose module failure?

I did verify that both the fans in the laptop are spinning.

Gaming laptops run hot. You really can't improve cooling a great deal when you are stressing the system (like during heavy gaming).

You can do things like reducing "maximum processor state" to 99% in your power management profile. That will prevent the CPU boosting itself to full capacity, but will limit performance.

Under no circumstance would I recommend overclocking a gaming laptop. Doing so exacerbates the inherent issues of gaming laptops, in general (get hot, restrictive airflow, etc).
