laptop for mechanical engineering student

Im a mom looking to get son a new computer for Christmas for school. He is in his second year as a mechanical engineer. The school (dept) suggests the following: Processor 2.5 or higher; Operating system: 64 bit; Memory 8 Gb Ram; H.D. 500 or higher; Discrete graphics. Running a lot of software (running AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, or other design programs) I'm also thinking SSD. Anything I should stay away from? Im freaking about the cost but I guess he'll need this. I hope it lasts the next 2-3 years. Thank you

First what is the weight requirement and battery life.
Second what is the budget?
Third does he care about looks?
Fourth, will he be upgrading the laptop in the future.

I would look at MSi's new GS series or the Asus gl series.

128 SSD for OS, 1 TB Hard drive.
Discrete GTX 960
8 Gb of ram (can be upgraded too)
i5 proccessor ( only 2.3 Ghz [which is honestly fine], but they also have the i7 w/ 2.6 Ghz for sale)
