I have a HP Pavilion dv5z 1000 notebook with AMD Turion x2 dual core processor and ati radeon hd 3200 graphics. From what i hear, the cpu is good enough but the gpu sucks. I then did some research on upgrading the gpu and found that it is not possible to upgrade the gpu in laptops. Can i just remove the motherboard and purchase a new motherboard and attach a new gpu (ati hd 3870) and use it in my laptop? How much is it going to cost? Please reply soon.

also motherboard has to fit into current case & all connections to keyboard, touch pad, etc have to be compatible between old board & new board. get a new laptop then sell the old laptop to recover part of the cost of new laptop.

The cost will be prohibitive even if you can find one. Also you will run into problems with Windows as it will be OEM and tied to the first motherboard. You can probably get around that by calling Microsoft but they are under no obligation to allow you to do it.

You may also need to find an upgraded heat sink to dissipate the extra heat. It's really not worth it, a better option is to sell the laptop and upgrade to one that meets your needs. Laptops are just not designed for upgrading, well at least 99% of them are not.
