Laptop lid closed, external display - No sound

Hello all,

I just bought a Sony Vaio Pro 13. When I close the lid, and use an external display, I get no sound. I've already changed the windows settings for the laptop to function with the lid closed. External monitor, mouse, and keyboard function properly, just not the sound.

Anybody have any ideas on why the sound won't work?

Any ideas are appreciated

Have you tried external speakers or the speakers in the monitor (if it has speakers). Maybe it switches to the external speaker jack since it knows you are using an external monitor. Just a thought.

If that's not it, I would make sure the computer has all of the newest drivers relating to that and make sure you have all the latest updates for Windows.

No luck with the speakers or headphones attached.

I'm wondering if its the HDMI cable, since it carries the video and audio?

We have some people at work that run their dual monitors with vga and dvi, and it works with the lid closed. Only difference is the lack of HDMI, and their computers are lenovo.

Could it b3e the HDMI trying to carry an audio and video signal?

That sounds likely. Does the computer and monitor have VGA connections you can try to see if the audio works when using those? Does the monitor have speakers? If so, the audio should be working with the HDMI connection. I would also check all the options in your computer's audio properties (Control Panel / Audio) to see if something needs to be changed or switched.

I'll give that a shot later tonight, see what I find.

To sum it up, the HDMI was taking taking priority of the audio and setting the monitor as the default device. (Even though it did not have speakers) Just had to go into the sound properties and set the laptop as the default audio device.
