Laptop needed for college

I'm looking for a good college laptop. Preferably under $500. I don't need it for gaming in any way, simply just tasks such as Microsoft word/excel and video streaming like Netflix. I'd like to keep it small (ie. 13') and have good battery life. Please no self-righteous posts, just advice?
