Laptop needs charger only for initial boot else it works fine!!

I am using acer aspire since 5 or 6 years. It was working just fine but suddenly it didnt turn on without being connected to the charger. But after it is turned on and started showing acer logo on screen during boot, then it will work just fine even if the charger is now removed and battery backup is just fine. So my laptop needs charger only for lighting the power button else it works fine.
I also used an digital charger once to check battery activity and found out that the battery is not detected when it is power off and even the laptop is not being charged. But once it is booted using charger plugged in, then only the battery is detected and it start charging!!!!

I will still ask. How old is the battery? If this is still the original or an older one it might simply not have enough power to initiate a startup but once the laptop starts going it's fine (a system upon powerup tends to pull a lot more for a short bit than when in use).
