Laptop recommendation for general use around $500

Hi, I'm well versed with PCs but never bought a laptop. This one is for my sister. Will buy it in the coming week.

She might use it for

1. Web browsing
2. Netflix
3. Watching Full HD movies on external hard drive(USB 3.0 mandatory)
4. Skype

No brand preference but I don't want a Toshiba.
Slight preference towards intel processors.
My budget is 500 +- 50 USD.

I've heard good things about Lenovo's Thinkpad line, mainly about their excelling quality keyboards.

I actually have a Dell Latitude D630 I use as a light media PC, which goes to show how little you need for basic web browsing. It might be worth looking into government refurbished models or even on facebook trade pages for a deal as you could find something a little older for much cheaper that would do the same thing.

Is there anything specific needed of the laptop beyond media and skype?

No, but I want to be able to make use of it for atleast 3 years. So I will pay upfront rather than fuss about a non performing device in a couple of years.
