cannot switch back to laptop screen after disconnected from moniter

It's usually one of the top row of 'F' keys that alternates between internal/external screen.
Look for 'F' key with two monitor icons on it.
You may need to press 'Fn' key also.

On my Toshiba laptop it's Fn + F5 to switch between laptop screen and external monitor.
