Laptop screen goes black when moved

Hi,

I have a laptop and the screen turns off every time I move it. This happens only when the AC adapter is not connected. In case I connect the charger, the screen comes back to life. It is a dell laptop. Also, it does not mean the laptop is shut down. Just that the screen goes black and there is a faint picture still visible. If this happens while watching a movie, the sound is still alive, but no picture (almost faint looking images)

As I have read on the forum, disassembling and reassembling everything might work, but since I have never opened a laptop before, I was wondering if that is the last solution (apart from going to a repair center).

Before you do anything like take it apart, double check your power settings for what happens to the screen when running on battery. But it does sound like maybe a bad lid switch. It's worth a shot though.

Thanks for the answer. However, if it is a bad switch, it should go off even when powered by AC adapter which is not the case. This happens only when running on the battery.,

True, have you "upgraded" to windows 10 by chance? Possible driver issues, as similar things were happening to my wife's laptop afterward, until I updated the drivers. Also, try switching to high performance power mode under running on battery, if that works, I would guess driver issues.

Also, update your drivers through the laptop manufacture's website, not through device manager for the best optimal ones, and not generic "this should work" ones that windows will give you.
