Laptop screen white, use external monitor

When I turn on my laptop now, the screen is blank white. I have a monitor I want to use instead, but I can't figure out how to get it to connect. I cannot login, and I have tried closing the lid when I boot. Thanks!

You need to first make sure the laptop is off, completely. Then plug in the external monitor and turn it on, then turn on the laptop. It should recognize it on it's own.
