Laptop shutdowns automatically after few seconds

Hi,
My Acer 4738 laptop is automatically being shutdown after few seconds. It has no problem with booting and all. But after turning on, within a minute it shutdown it's own. I have tried it using without battery, by giving directly connecting with adapter. Now I have disassembled and cleaned it's fan and RAM and removed all internal dust. But still no progress. Please do help.

If it has power and everything is running normally, but it shuts down at about the same time after every boot, then it is most likely a thermal issue.

Try to go into the bios and check to see if there is a thermal/temperature reading anywhere on any of the tabs. Don't be too surprised if there is not.

This is a pretty old system, probably about seven years, so it wouldn't be too surprising to find that there was a problem with one of the motherboard subsystems, specifically, related to the the thermal protections, or that the CPU is simply electronically degraded to the point where it can no longer avoid overheating regardless that the cooling system still functions. Core temperatures tend to instantly rise or fall, so if there is a degraded circuit, short or failure to report the thermal sensor readings to the associated protection routine in the bios monitoring program, it would overheat and shut down fairly quickly, likely within seconds of reaching windows.

It could however be any amount of time, long or short, based on the severity of the problem.

It could be something other than a thermal issue but the symptoms are very much like what we see on a great many laptops that have had thermal issues.

Does it do anything at all before it shuts down, blue screen, error, fans not running or running at full speed, anything other than just on one minute and off the next? No warnings on the screen or anything else?

It could also be an issue with the power jack overheating or shorting out after a period of being on, which could either simply create an open circuit that would cause it to shut down but then reconnect the metal contact after cooling, or again triggering a protection of some kind.

If it was any kind of software or hardware issue NOT thermally related or related to the power jack assembly, there would almost certainly be some sort of error or reboot situation rather than just simply turning off.

You might also want to consider replacing the CMOS battery just for giggles. I've see a bad cmos battery cause any number of goofy and seemingly unrelated problems when they've gone dead. Probably not the problem but for two bucks it's certainly worth a try.
