Laptop suggestions for my 16 year old

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of laptops or suggestions of what to look for and what to avoid.

The laptop is for my 16 year old son who will be using it for school work, internet browsing, video chat, watching Netflix and YouTube, and some low end gaming.

I know a bit about PCs but have not kept up on things recently and have never really been in the know about laptops.

I am really looking for something in the sub £400 mark and was thinking about an i3 or i5 processor over an AMD due to the power draw.

This is really good for school-work. It's pretty fast and efficient.
The one you mentioned is really good for school as well.

Within that budget you will really only find a laptop with the Core i3-6006u. There are laptops with AMD APU in your price range, but both processing and graphics performance will be worse than what the Core i3-6006u can provide. Is it enough to play "low end" games, yes some low game, but it depends on the game. Perhaps that is a good thing... poor gaming performance may make your son focus more on school work.... would you like some of the drugs I am taking?

There are games that certainly playable especially since it only has a 1366x768 resolution screen. The lower the resolution the less stress is placed on the graphics core so better performance. Games are definitely playable as long as your son is willing to use a mix of low and medium settings with performance in the 30 FPS to 45 FPS. Examples from personal experience with a laptop that has a 4th generation Intel CPU instead of a 6th generation Intel CPU includes, Skyrim, Fallout 3 (with a d3d9.dll file from NexusMod.com), Mass Effect 2 & 3, and Star Trek Online.

Fallout: New Vegas and Oblivion are payable as well since Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vega both use the same game engine that was developed for Oblivion. Minecraft would definitely be playable as well as the Sims 3 since I have seen them run on less powerful laptops.
