Laptop temperature

I have a Dell N5010 laptop with an Intel core-i5 460M and a Mobility Radeon HD 4650. While playing games like FIFA11 and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, the motherboard temperature goes up to 90 degrees Celsius and the 4650HD to 80-85 degrees. Is this temperature normal? I use CPUID HW monitor to check these temperatures.

Those temps seem very high for the motherboard, though i don't know what part of the motherboard it is. As for the 4650, that temp is a bit high, but seems within the thermal limits of the graphics card. Try to make sure no vents are being covered when gaming, because the motherboard temp sounds extremely high and likely to cause damage to it.

Is it possible a virus is causing the temperatures to go so high? I bought the laptop about 3 months back, and the temperature didn't go so high in the first 1-1.5 months. Also, I keep the laptop slightly elevated so that the fan vent is a good 1-2 inches off the surface. Could a laptop cooling pad keep the temperatures down?

It is possible that a virus is causing your CPU to at a higher usage when not doing anything, but it shouldn't cause the temps to go up anywhere that much. I would get some canned air and spray in the vents because it sounds like a dust build up problem if it used to run cooler. The cooling pad wouldnt be a bad idea either.
