Question Laptop to AVR for Surround Sound 5.1

Hi I have a laptop with some 5.1 files that I want to listen to and I have a Yamaha RX-V2300 please help me!

Hi thanks for taking the time to help me! I am unfortunate to say that my receiver doesn't have any HDMI ports, my laptop justs has a 3.5mm jack and 2 USB for any external soundcards and an HDMI

This is not produce 5.1 sound.

how do I use the startech 7.1 usb card? what cables does it use for each channel? would a USB to optical be good?
