Laptop to tv- only background shows

Hello,
I have hooked up my laptop to my Sony tv, and all it shows it the desktop background. No icons, so surfing. Do get sound, though. Any suggestions?

You are in extended mode and not clone mode.

With extended, you can drag a program to the side of the screen(normally the right side) and place it onto the other screen.

You should try clone(may effect quality if the screen resolutions do not match) or TV only for best performance.
