Laptop with broken screen won't connect to monitor

I broke my laptop screen and it has since been connected to a monitor. I decided to to factory reset it and I realize that it won't connect to the monitor until it gets to the login screen. Is there anything I can do for that? I tried closing the lid when I turned it on and I can't toggle between screens either.

Unlikely to get this working at this point. It is too many keystrokes to be able to get this right from memory.

I would look into replacing the notebook's display, or just upgrade the entire notebook to a new one.
