Laptop wont start when a hard drive is in it

It's an acer 7552g. When I attempt to turn it on it will lose turn off again within a few seconds from after I pressed the button. It doesn't matter if I only use battery or ac adapter to power it, and I tried holding down the power button while it was disconnected from any source of power.
When I have my hard drive in either of the 2 hard drive slots this happens. When I take it out of the machine, it lets me sit in bios for as long as I wish. I can boot ubuntu from a cd too. I also tried to boot the hard drive in another machine and it turns out to work just fine. It boots perfectly well and it doesnt fail the diagnostic fail that win7 made me ran before I could start windows. Any suggestions?

sounds like there may be some type of hardware failure on the board. i.e. bad hard drive controller.
