I am wanting to purchase one of the above laptops. Both are relatively the same price and the same specs

Dell:

6th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-6200U Processor (3M Cache, up to 2.80 GHz)
8GB, 1600MHz, DDR3L; up to 16GB
1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
Intel HD graphics 520
4 cell, 40 Whr battery

Lenovo (20EV002FUS):

Intel Core i5 i5-6200U Dual-core (2 Core) 2.30 GHz
4 GB RAM - 500 GB HDD
Intel HD graphics 520
6 cell, 48 Whr battery

both are non touch with dvd drives. Anyone have any insight as to the better machine? I want a (actual) battery life of around 5-6 hours as needed for school.

Solution
As battery life is your main concern, Lenovo laptop will be better choice for you. It has 6 cell battery which will give you better battery backup than Dell laptop. As far as other specs are concerned, you can upgrade its RAM to 8GB by putting 4GB more in the spare slot later.
