after using my laptop this morning, I turned it on later and all I got was a message preparing automatic repair.

Hi,

Do a hard reset first with it. Remove the battery and AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. Plug them both back in and boot it back up, if ever you'll see an option for Start Windows Normally select it and press Enter. If that doesn't work run just run the Automatic Repair since it would fix it automatically if it can. Lastly is to press the F8 button repeatedly while the laptop is booting from shut down and select Last Know Good Config from the list and press Enter.

Hope this helps.
