Lenovo Thinkpad with "plugged in, not charging"

My Lenovo Thinkpad is not charging the battery and shows a "plugged in, not charging" message. I have a pending Bios update that won't update since the batteries are not charged.

It could be the charger cord or the battery.

Try charging when it is turned off (not sleep or hibernate but off). If it won't charge then either, then I would replace the battery. If it will charge then, I would look at the charger as the problem.
