Hi,

I'm looking at getting a gaming laptop (my desktop is great but it would be handy to have some portability). I found the Lenovo Y70 Touch for £799.97 including £100 cashback from savingsonlaptops.co.uk.

Is this a good deal?

Or would you suggest something else? I'm open to spending a bit more if it's worth it (max €1500/£1100).

By the way I live in Ireland and will be using it for gaming. I'm planning on buying The Witcher 3 and I'm guessing that it will run on low settings (possibly with a lower resolution).

P.S. Would it be a better idea to get a laptop with a GTX 970M?

Thanks. Do you have any suggestion of what laptop to go for then (with a 970M)?

Thanks. I had a quick look at the prices for them. I found the first for about £1350 and the other for £1200. They are slightly out of my max budget. At least £400 seems like quite a lot for one step up in GPU.

I guess that I will have to consider it for a little while.

Do you know if there are usually sales in laptops after Christmas? I might find a 970M at a better price but it would be a risk as the cashback ends on the 24th.

To get rid of extra stock. I know that in Ireland there are sales on St Stephens Day (26th). This may not apply to laptops though (or any larger electronics).

After more looking I found the Asus G751JT for €1500 (~£1100).

It has 8GB RAM as opposed to 16GB, a 1TB HDD instead of a 265GB SSD but does have the GTX 970M. Would this be worth it?

P.S. Would it be possible to add RAM to the Asus at a later data or swap out the DVD drive for a HDD or SSD in either of the models?

Yes you can add ram to most any ROG laptops but you may have to buy a new kit depending on how many slots are used with the default 8 gigs. That is a good price for the laptop and the smaller ram won't make much of a difference in games.

I would go with ASUS if you like them. I have 2 Lenovo Y 70 Touch and both have had video issues. I really did love the computer at first, but i am very disappointed in the quality. We purchased them and the screen has always had a flicker on one of them. It has been sent out for repair multiple times and still not working. I just posted today about my other Y70 Touch and it too has failed. I think it may be motherboard. They are not even 2 years old. I have 3 ASUS laptops and never had an issue with one. One of them is 11 and i keep it updated. The others are 4 and 6. They work great. I am not sure what is happening with Lenovo, I have used them in the past but it was the business class not gaming. Just some FYI. Save your money and get a better gaming computer.

I created this thread about one and a half years ago.

But to answer I ended up going for an MSI GE72 6QF and have had it since. I have had some problems with it too.

From the first day the trackpad hasn't been working correctly. Sending it back to get repaired didn't help.

Sparks came from the cable from the socket to the charger and one of the wires burned out. It turned out that they put a 15A fuse which is way too much (the new cable which they sent me has a 5A one).

The RAM has been unstable. Around last Christmas the laptop would freeze if I moved it or touched the wrong spot. I removed one of the sticks of RAM and that fixed it. Oddly enough the RAM works again now (I put it back in a few weeks ago to test it).

So it seems like MSI are having build quality problems too. However, I still don't regret getting a laptop (even though if I could go back in time I might get an Asus one instead). And I still don't have any use in upgrading my desktop. Even though it's 6 years old it can still play The Witcher 3 smoothly (for me 30 or 60 fps doesn't make a difference).
