I'm looking for a laptop which weighs less than 4 lbs and has decent battery life.
I am an electrical engineering student so will need a dedicated GPU for CAD work.
I don't really play any games.
Budget- under $1000
(The Legion Y540 15" seems good but is too heavy and probably an overkill as I don't game.)

Light, dedicated GPU and battery life don't really mix well, especially for your budget. The light systems like the Razer ones are over your budget unless you look around for a used one.

If you forget the weight and just focus on the specs you need then you have something to work with.

An option may be a system with a AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 CPU, the onboard video in that is pretty good and will be well under your budget https://www.neweggbusiness.com/Prod...Z2hHjAUPqyIb1kWzSG4aAnqxEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds or higher end https://www.newegg.com/p/1TS-000D-04DK3 https://www.newegg.com/mineral-grey-lenovo-ideapad-s540-81nh0019us-mainstream/p/N82E16834847993
