Little Knowledge about Hardware--Laptop Recommendation

I am looking at purchasing a new laptop because the one I am currently using is not getting the job done. My computer will typically be used for everyday functions like web browsing and standard use of Microsoft Office. However, I do on occasion need it to be able to open quickly and easily large sets of data generally .mat files, and I need to be able to manipulate these large data sets. I also need to be able to have several programs installed on my computer without any serious loss of speed.

Number of programs that are installed do not do anything to the speed, unless they run on start-up and monitor things constantly.
