Question Lollipop 5.1.1 too old to recognise 64 GB micro SD?

I've got an old Android tablet running Lollipop 5.1.1 but it won't recognise a 64 GB micro SD card (San Disk but I've tried others).
Is this version simply too old?
I'd like to use this old tablet as a glorified e-reader using the files on this micro SD.

The max for those older devices was 32GB. Sorry.
