Hello there,
I've been looking for some college laptop for solid while by now, I've managed to cut it to Lenovo Y series. However, should you have a better idea, I'd be happy to hear the advice.

I'm not looking for purely gaming rig, I need also certain degree of mobility. That's why I'd like to stick with the 15,6' inch models. I've been most 'attracted' towards Y580, but it seems that updated version (Haswell and GTX760m) is nowhere close to release. If I understand it right, it's been more-or-less replaced by Y500 or Y510p respectively.

Y510p looks very promising, I'm just a bit of a skeptic when it comes to SLi - battery heavy, hot, possible compatibility issues (rarer than in the past, but still). Also Optimus was a nice addition in Y580 that Y500 and Y 510p lack.

I do not consider buying Y500 much, as I'd definitely prefer the updated Y510 for not so high extra charge. I will need it to be a bit mobile as mentioned - I understand that I can't expect perfect mobility from gaming/multimedia laptop, but maybe updated harware will help a little (I know Haswell will, but I also know that Y510 has reduced battery when compared to Y500, so in the end, I do not know :)).

So far the Y510p looks like the best choice. I wonder if somebody has any experience with that model - battery life in practice, durability and so on. Or, that would be best, if there's any info about Y580's updated version? I could not find anything and I fear the worst.

Or should you recommend a completely different brand, I would be interested in checking out that, too. Budget is somewhere arround the price of Y510, which is approx. 1300$ I believe.

Thanks for all the info :)!

Most "store brands" contain some nice components that wind up in the ads but then they cut back on others (i.e. 5400 rpm Hard Drive) to hit the price point they want that make it look attractive. I much prefer to have my lappies custom built to specifications that suit my needs rather than their marketing goals.

Lenovo doesn't actually "make" a laptop BTW. Arguments about which store brand is better are sometimes "interesting" when both are made in the same factory.

The vast majority of laptops on the market (94% in 2011) are manufactured by a small handful of Taiwan-based Original Design Manufacturers (ODM), although their production bases are located mostly in mainland China. Major relationships include:

Quanta sells to (among others) HP, Lenovo, Apple, Acer, Toshiba, Dell, Sony, Fujitsu and NEC
Compal sells to (among others) Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and HP/Compaq
Wistron (former manufacturing & design division of Acer) sells to Dell, Acer, Lenovo and HP
Inventec sells to Toshiba, HP and Lenovo
Pegatron sells to Asus, Toshiba, Apple, Dell and Acer
Foxconn sells to Asus, Dell, HP and Apple
Flextronics (former Arima Computer Corporation notebook division) sells to HP

Thanks legokill101 for the tip, altough I don't really like the design, the specs do look great actually!

JackNaylorPE thanks for your tip, I checked it out, even customized the ideal laptop. Price is great, barebone is pretty decent. But that all has one major drawback for me - there's no retailer in my country. Purchase would be perhaps possible, but should I be unfortunate enough to apply warranty - that'd get uncomfortable.

I've had a look and again... SAGER NP7352 for example looks just about perfect, but there's availability issue, as I do not live in the US.

I live in Europe. To be more specific, I live in the part of Europe where is no retailer for those brands. Thus, I'd have to order from Germany or UK. That would not be that much of a problem, but problem would be if I needed to apply warranty. Pack it, send it, it would be much more difficult than it'd be from local retailer, or, at least, the one in same country I am from. And there's none.

Thanks for the tip, but I really don't want to go with 17,3'. I'm looking into Y510p and Clevo P157SM mostly. Second being quite expensive for my budget, but very appealing, so I am quite intrigued atm.
