What laptop would be best for running cad and engineering software in an engineering high school class.

You should look for one with Quadro graphics as they are designed for using CAD applications. What's your budget?

For high-school here is the type of system you want: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-W510-15-6-LED-Notebook-Core-i7-i7-820QM-1-73GHz-/151557975679?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item23498f2e7f

A new system for CAD will be about $1,200 and up, which I doubt you or your paents want to spend. A new cheap laptop will be, well, crap, to put it simply, to run with CAD. You can also look at the newer W520 models or for an HP Z book. I like the Lenovo systems because they have some of the best build quality and case quality I have seen, in their top models which is the T and W models.

I don't really have a budget I do have a surface pro1
