Solution
You should first attempt to play a known-to-be-good store-bought DVD, and don't panic just because there is a problem with a particular (dirty? home-made?) DVD.

If that doesn't do it, is normal for some DVD players to open the tray, because (1)there is no DVD in it and the player assumes you want to insert a DVD, (2)The inserted DVD is detected to be bad, scratched and un-readable.

The player POWERING OFF (all lights off) all by itself is definitely a hardware problem. Nobody fixes anything, buy new.
