I guess you'll have to provide proof of purchase before they'll do anything about it.
Whether they can actually recover it or not is a different story and it's entirely up to them. First step is to fill a police report, that way if it ever turns up you'll have grounds for recovering it.

Unless you had an application like Lojack for Laptops installed and operating before the loss, then chances are the laptop is gone forever. There is a chance that it could turn up in a pawn shop or as part of another legal action, but it is likely never coming back.

Report the theft to the local police and to your insurance company.
