Question LTE or Bluetooth

My new Google Pixel Watch 3 has the LTE feature and the google wallet app installed as a standard feature, do I have to have my Oppo A80 using 4G network smartphone with me if I want to make touch and go payments with the watch or is the watch independent of the phone? My previous watch used my phones bluetooth connection for phone calls, can I use bluetooth if this one has LTE? I already have google wallet on my Oppo A80 and have successfully used it to make touch and go payments, my question is really what are my options for linking my new watch to my phone to make google wallet payments.
