Hi everyone,

I just bought a MBP i7 with a 250go SSD and a 1To drive replacing the superdrive.

This second drive has very slow transfer rates. (It took it about 5 hours to copy 50 Gb from a firewire 800 external disk).
It take ages to show the folder contents, (as if it needed to rest sometimes).
I tried running disk utility repair function, I tried reformating it. No improvements.

I took it to the shop where I bought it, they replaced the drive and still no improvements. Do I need to update the Macbook EFI ? SMC ? Or is it totally unrelated.

My OS X version is 10.9.4.

I downloaded Blackmagic speed test.

The first time a ran it, it froze on the "read" phase, and a minute later, the disk ejected itself. With the message "The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off.".
(Yeah I forgot to mention in my first post, it ejects like this from time to time when I copy files on it, or when I try to access it).

I tried many times, it seems to go on sleep mode and be innaccessible for a while sometimes.

When I managed to get a correct try on blackmagic test, without freezing states, it gave me about 100 mb write and about 100 mb read. I'd love it to work like this all the time, but I don't know how to reproduce the times when it works correctly and the times it just pauses and freezes.

No BIOS equivalent on the Mac. But that is definately a lead regarding speed negociation.
From the forum posts you submitted it seems that the problem comes from SATA III and SATA II differences.

My System Info says it's negociating 6 Gigabits but the drive is a SATA II drive, which is unable to negociate such speeds.
The solution is to have the correct speed negociation. I see three potential leads :
- I will try tomorrow to open it up and see if the drive has a jumper to limit speed negociation. That seems to solve those drops for other users.
- Another thing would be to use a SATA III drive which would negociate the right speed that the intel chipset demands.
- And finally the SATA adapter could also be an issue, using a SATA II adapter could tell the chipset to negociate 3 Gigabits that the disk can handle.

I'll come back to you if I find something that works for me.

In the meantime, thanks to all of you for your time, and if you have other clues, I'd be happy to hear it.
